What you get, and what it takes

The discount applies once: enter the code at checkout during your very first Airalo purchase, on a genuinely new account, since it does nothing for an existing customer or for someone who only signs up without buying. Airalo's own referral page also warns that you may not receive the discount if you have already used a different Airalo promotion on the same order, so do not expect two codes to stack.

Size the saving against what you are actually buying rather than against the code itself. Airalo's cheapest Eurolink bundle, 3GB over 7 days, costs €10.00 (checked 16 August 2026), so the discount is close to a third of that order. Against a 30 day unlimited regional pass at €63.00 (checked 28 August 2026) it is under 5%. A referral code is worth having, but it should not be the reason you pick Airalo over a genuinely cheaper plan.

What it is and how it works in practice

Airalo is a reseller, not a network. It buys wholesale roaming access from local mobile operators in each country and repackages it as a prepaid eSIM profile you install instead of a plastic SIM card. The company behind it is AirGSM Pte Ltd, registered in Singapore and trading since 2019; it raised $220 million led by CVC in July 2025 at a valuation above $1 billion, and its own figures put its user base above 30 million travellers across more than 200 destinations, though those numbers are company reported rather than audited.

Two hardware checks decide whether it works on your phone at all, and neither is a model name lookup. First, the phone needs eSIM support: check for the option directly in settings, Add eSIM under Cellular or Mobile on iPhone, SIM Manager on Samsung, Download a new eSIM under SIMs on Pixel. Regional variants of the same handset can differ; mainland China iPhone models, for instance, carry no eSIM hardware at all despite the same model name. Second, the phone must be carrier unlocked; on iPhone, Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock should read No SIM restrictions, and a locked phone will refuse a third party eSIM even where the hardware supports it.

Most Airalo plans are data only, with no phone number attached, so calls and SMS will not reach that line at all; a minority of packages do include calls and texts, and the plan page states which before you buy. Your existing SIM still has a job to do: keep it active for calls and texts, but switch off its own data roaming so it cannot quietly run up charges in the background, and on iPhone also turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, since left on it can silently fall back to your home line for data even with that line's roaming switched off.

Installing needs an internet connection; using it afterwards does not, which is why the right moment to scan the QR code or install the profile is at home on trusted wifi, days before you fly. Airalo states that an eSIM typically cannot be reinstalled once deleted, so treat the install as single shot: get it onto the device you are actually taking, and disable rather than delete it once your trip ends. One nuance decides whether installing early costs you anything: on most plans the validity clock starts when the eSIM first connects to a network inside its coverage area, so an early install is free, but on a minority it starts at installation itself, and Airalo shows which under Package details before you buy. If you live in Europe and are buying a Eurolink plan, do not activate it before you leave home, since a regional plan that includes your own country can connect there and start the clock early.

Coverage, pricing and the limits inside the plan

Airalo's regional Eurolink plan covers 41 countries and networks, checked on airalo.com on 28 August 2026, so one plan can carry you across most of a multi-country trip without buying a new eSIM at each border. Two ways to pay for it exist side by side: fixed data bundles and unlimited day passes. Airalo reprices constantly; the unlimited figures below, checked 28 August 2026, ran about €0.50 lower per duration than a check of the same plans on 16 August 2026, so treat any price here as a snapshot and confirm on the storefront before buying.

'Unlimited' has a ceiling, and it is the single most useful thing to know before you buy one. Every unlimited pass allows 3GB of high-speed data in any rolling 24 hours, counted from activation rather than from midnight, after which speed drops to 1Mbps until that window resets. 1Mbps is enough for messaging, maps and standard browsing, and it will buffer through standard-definition video, but it is not enough for a smooth video call or a large upload. Hotspot sharing carries no separate cap on unlimited plans, and there is no limit on how many devices you tether, but everything shared still comes out of the same 3GB a day, so a laptop pulling updates over the hotspot can spend the whole allowance before lunch. Fixed bundles carry no throttle at all: full speed until the gigabytes run out, then the eSIM simply stops until you top up the same profile, no overage charge either way.

How the referral works and how to claim it

Airalo does not publish public codes, so you need one from a friend who already has an account, typically shared from the Refer and earn section of their profile. Create your own Airalo account through the app or at airalo.com, since the code only does anything on a first purchase.

Choose your eSIM plan as normal, then enter the code at checkout before you pay. It has to be applied manually; Airalo does not detect or add it automatically, so typing it in after payment will not retroactively apply it. Complete the purchase and the discount lands on that order.

Pros, cons, and who this actually suits

Airalo earns its convenience premium in a specific band. Set up correctly before you fly, data works the moment you land, without a shop visit or a queue. One Eurolink plan spans 41 countries, so a multi-stop European trip does not mean buying a new eSIM at every border. Fixed bundles run at full speed with no throttle and no surprise overage, and unlimited plans let you hotspot to as many devices as you like without a per-device fee.

The costs are just as specific. Most plans carry no phone number, so anything that leans on SMS, a bank one-time code, a ride-hail verification text, needs a workaround with your home SIM kept active. The 3GB daily ceiling on unlimited plans is a real wall for anyone streaming or on video calls for hours, not a marketing footnote. Installs are single shot; delete the eSIM and Airalo says it typically cannot be restored. Refunds are tight once a plan is activated: the 14 day right of withdrawal disappears the moment you connect, and an activated plan that does not work needs a claim within 30 days plus a 10 day window for Airalo to attempt a fix before any refund is owed. On Trustpilot, checked 15 August 2026, 17% of 38,862 reviews were one star, clustered around failing to connect on arrival and coverage weaker than the traveller's own carrier roaming in the same spot.

It suits short trips under two weeks, multi-country itineraries within one region, and daily use that stays under about 3GB. It suits you less for a stay of a month or longer in one country, where a local prepaid SIM is usually cheaper per gigabyte and comes with an actual phone number, and less again if you tether a laptop for work most of the day, since that traffic draws on the same 3GB ceiling. For that specific case, Holafly's monthly Plans subscription sells unlimited hotspot sharing with no daily cap, at a separate monthly price, built for exactly the workload Airalo's daily ceiling was not.

The throttling cliff, and when a bundle beats unlimited

The unlimited passes and the fixed bundles are not really two products, they are two ways to buy against the same 3GB daily ceiling, and the arithmetic decides which one to pick. Per gigabyte, the fixed bundles run from roughly €3.33 on the smallest, €10.00 for 3GB, down to about €1.25 on the largest, €62.50 for 50GB over 30 days, cheaper the more you commit to. The 7 day unlimited pass costs €24.00, almost exactly the €23.50 that buys 10GB over the same 7 days as a fixed bundle. That near match is the actual crossover point: unlimited only starts earning its keep once you would genuinely need more than about 10GB across a week, roughly 1.4GB a day. Below that line, a small fixed bundle is drastically cheaper for the same trip, €10.00 against €24.00 for a light week where you would never touch the 3GB daily ceiling anyway.

Above that line, unlimited does not keep helping forever either. The same 3GB high speed ceiling applies whether you paid for the day pass or a bundle, so once your actual daily use is consistently past 3GB, no Airalo plan, fixed or unlimited, keeps you at full speed all day. The honest shape of the product: it is the better buy for a narrow band of daily use, roughly 1.4GB to 3GB a day, a worse buy than a small bundle below that band, and it simply cannot serve, at full speed, anyone consistently above it.
