What is Instarem?

Instarem is a cross-border money-transfer service owned by Nium. It lets people send money internationally from an app or web dashboard, and its own referral reward table covers the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan. In the EEA the service is provided by UAB "NIUM EU", an electronic money institution licensed by the Bank of Lithuania under licence No. 14 and passported across all 30 EEA states. UK customers are served instead by Nium Fintech Limited, FCA reference 901024.

Alongside the transfer service, Instarem runs a loyalty currency called InstaPoints, redeemed as a discount against future transfers rather than withdrawn as money. InstaPoints matter here because they are the entire reward for one side of the referral.

How the Instarem referral code works

The two sides of this offer are not equal, and the gap is large. The person doing the referring receives a cash bonus, which Instarem sets per country: EUR 40 in Europe and GBP 40 in the UK, with different amounts and formats elsewhere. The person joining receives InstaPoints only. Instarem's live referral page confirms this without giving a figure, saying that a friend who joins will also get InstaPoints, and InstaPoints are a discount on a future transfer, not a payment.

In practical terms, signing up through an Instarem referral code is worth a modest single-digit sum to you in transfer discount, and a meaningful cash payment to whoever referred you. Instarem's published InstaPoints guidance puts a redemption of 100 to 400 points at roughly EUR 1.25 to EUR 5, and redemption is subject to a minimum transfer of EUR 500.

How to use an Instarem referral code

There is no code published on this page, and no generic Instarem code to type in. A referral code or link is generated inside an existing customer's own dashboard or app, so you need someone who already uses the service to send you theirs. Instarem also requires that you register directly through that link, because third-party sign-ups are disqualified from the program.

• Ask an existing Instarem customer to share the referral link from their dashboard or app.
• Register directly with Instarem using that link, not through any intermediary site.
• Apply the referrer's code at signup, or when you begin your first transaction.
• Do not apply any other coupon code, since using one forfeits the referral reward.
• Complete Instarem's identity verification.
• Send a first transfer that meets the minimum set out in the terms.

Eligibility and requirements

The conditions are ordinary for this type of offer, but a few catch people out. The minimum qualifying first-transfer amount is not published on Instarem's public pages, so you cannot confirm in advance how large your first transfer needs to be. Referrers are capped at 10 successful referrals, and Instarem states the referral offer is valid until 30 September 2026, which is a date worth rechecking rather than assuming.

Availability depends on whether Instarem permits outbound transfers from the country the new customer lives in. No EU or EEA exclusion list is published, but the amounts differ sharply by market and are not interchangeable. Instarem's own table lists a USD 25 gift card in the United States, CAD 70 in Canada, GBP 40 in the UK, EUR 40 in Europe, an AUD 30 gift card in Australia, SGD 70 in Singapore, MYR 150 in Malaysia, HKD 400 in Hong Kong and JPY 7,000 in Japan. All of those are the referrer's reward, not the newcomer's.

Reward details, and why older listings are out of date

If you have seen coupon pages promising a cash bonus to both sides of an Instarem referral, those figures are stale. Instarem ran two EU promotions that did pay the joining customer cash, Refer and Win and Invite and Earn, using the promo code BUDDY and paying EUR 20 on each of a new customer's first two transfers. Both expired, on 10 January 2024 and 11 March 2024 respectively. They are still widely quoted on third-party sites and should not be treated as current terms.

The newcomer's reward is also less firmly documented than you might expect. A figure of 200 InstaPoints circulates, but it comes from Instarem's Global Referral Program terms, whose EU section is marked as last updated in December 2019, while the current live referral page names no number at all. The honest position is that the friend receives InstaPoints of modest value, and that the exact amount should be confirmed in the app at the moment you sign up rather than taken from any published page, including this one.

Worth checking before you sign up

This page explains how the offer is structured; it is not financial advice, and how you move money across borders is your decision. One consumer point applies regardless of any referral: the cost of a transfer is the exchange rate plus the fee taken together, and the two move independently. A provider with a low headline fee and a weaker rate can cost more on a large transfer than one with a higher fee and a rate closer to the mid-market benchmark.

Set against that, a few euros of InstaPoints is a small factor. Comparing the total cost across two or three providers for the corridor and amount you need will usually matter far more than the joining incentive. The referral is a reasonable bonus if Instarem is already right for your route, and a poor reason to choose it if it is not.
