Proton Mail vs Gmail: what you actually gain, and what you give up

Almost every article on proton mail vs gmail makes the same mistake in its opening lines. It says Proton is end-to-end encrypted and Gmail is not, then treats that as the end of the argument. It is wrong in a way that matters: if you email a Gmail user from Proton, that message is not end-to-end encrypted and never was. The other end is Gmail.

What Proton actually sells is narrower and more useful. Proton cannot read the mail already sitting encrypted in your mailbox, and no legal order can force it to decrypt that. It is a real guarantee and it is a bounded one. A Swiss order can compel Proton to change what it captures about you from the moment the order lands, which is what happened in 2021, and mail arriving from a Gmail user passes through Proton's servers in the clear before Proton encrypts it. What an order cannot do is reach backwards into what is already encrypted. Here are the limits of that promise, where Gmail is genuinely better, what both cost, and how hard switching really is. Details come from Proton's and Google's own pages, checked on 16 August 2026.

Short answer

Choose Proton Mail if you want stored mail your provider cannot read and cannot be ordered to decrypt, accepting that a Swiss order can still compel Proton to change what it logs about you going forward, and you accept weaker search, a tiny free tier and paid-only IMAP. Gmail is the better product on search, storage, spam filtering and integration, and it is free. Google stopped scanning Gmail content for ad targeting in 2017, so if that is why you are leaving, the reason expired nine years ago.

What Proton's encryption actually protects, and from whom

Four separate things get welded together in most comparisons, and separating them is the point of this page. Transport encryption comes first: mail moving between Proton and Gmail travels over TLS, as it does between any two competent providers. That is not a Proton feature, and it protects the message only while it is on the wire.

Zero-access encryption is Proton's real product. Messages in your mailbox are encrypted with a key derived from your password, which Proton does not hold. Proton's marketing puts it as nobody being able to access your emails, not even Proton. It covers bodies and attachments at rest, which is why a court order for your inbox returns nothing readable. The part left out elsewhere: when a Gmail user emails you, that message arrives at Proton's servers in the clear, and Proton then encrypts it to your public key. Zero-access describes your mail at rest, not its journey there.

True end-to-end encryption, where a message is encrypted on your device and decrypted only on the recipient's, happens automatically between two Proton accounts, with anyone using OpenPGP, or through password-protected messages. That last option reaches Gmail users: they get an Unlock message button and open it in a browser with a password you shared some other way. Those expire after 28 days by default and allow five replies. One wrinkle from Proton's docs: once your recipient replies, your reply is not end-to-end encrypted by default.

Metadata is the fourth thing and the least honestly reported. Subject lines, sender and recipient addresses are encrypted at rest but not end-to-end encrypted, which Proton attributes to following the OpenPGP standard. Proton can therefore see your subject lines, who you write to, and when. It says it keeps no permanent IP logs by default, but it can be compelled to start.

So the accurate sentence is this. Zero-access encryption protects your stored mail from Proton and from anyone who breaks into it. It does nothing for the copy sitting in your correspondent's Gmail, and it does not hide who you email.

Swiss jurisdiction: what it buys you, and what it does not

Proton is Swiss and Google is American. That changes who can compel disclosure and by what route, not whether it can be compelled. Proton refuses requests served directly by foreign authorities, so a US or French agency gets nowhere going straight to it. What it can do is work through Swiss channels and mutual legal assistance, and when a Swiss court issues a binding order, Proton complies.

The numbers matter before you switch for legal reasons. Proton's transparency report records 9,301 orders concerning Proton Mail in 2025, of which 988 were contested and 8,313 complied with. For 2024 it was 11,023 orders, 655 contested, 10,368 complied. Compliance is the normal outcome. Proton VPN, by contrast, reports denying every request in every year listed.

The 2021 French climate activist case is the concrete example, and it is misreported constantly. Proton received a legally binding Swiss order, was required to log the account's IP address, and handed that over. It did not hand over messages, because it cannot. Proton's write-up says under no circumstances can its encryption be bypassed, meaning emails, attachments, calendars and files cannot be compromised by legal orders. It also says, and the conditional matters, that the internet is generally not anonymous, and if you are breaking Swiss law, a law-abiding company such as Proton Mail can be legally compelled to log your IP address. The order is what turns the logging on; it does not exist by default.

The practical read: message content already encrypted in your mailbox is genuinely beyond any court's reach, because Proton holds no key to surrender. What an order does reach is your identity and connection metadata, and it can change what Proton captures about you from the moment it lands, which is exactly what the 2021 order did. That prospective route is the honest limit of the model. It is also the point at which mail arriving from a Gmail user sits briefly in the clear on Proton's servers before Proton encrypts it, so treat future correspondence as reachable in principle and already-stored mail as not.

What Google actually does with Gmail data in 2026

The most repeated claim about Gmail is that Google reads your mail to target ads. That stopped in 2017. On 23 June 2017 Google announced that consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change, and Gmail's current help pages state that Google does not process email content to serve ads. If that is your reason for switching, pick a better one, because better ones exist.

What continues is worth listing accurately. Google processes content automatically for spam, phishing and malware detection, which is exactly what makes its filtering so good. It uses hash matching to detect known child sexual abuse material and reports matches to NCMEC. It processes content for features such as Smart Compose, package tracking and pulling flights into Calendar. Those uses sit behind smart features and personalization settings, now split into separate controls, so you can switch off the Maps and Wallet crossovers and keep the mail. Google says ads are not based on your Gmail data whichever way those settings sit, and that ads in the Promotions and Social tabs come from general Google activity.

The exposure people underrate on Gmail is not Google, it is third-party access. Any app you ever granted mailbox permission through Google sign-in can read your mail under that grant, and those permissions pile up quietly over years. Auditing that list is free and takes five minutes.

So Google is not mining your emails to sell you shoes, it is processing them automatically to run filters and features, and it holds the plaintext because it must. Proton does not, and therefore cannot offer those features. That trade shows up most sharply in search.

The free tiers are not close, and Proton's is smaller than advertised

A Proton Free mailbox starts with 500 MB of mail storage. Proton's own FAQ says you can raise that to 1 GB free by completing a setup checklist. Most articles quote the 1 GB figure as the starting point, which is not what you get on day one.

A free Google account gets 15 GB, with its own underreported asterisk: that allowance is shared across Gmail, Drive, Photos and WhatsApp backups. Google's documentation is explicit that once you are over quota you cannot send or receive mail, messages sent to you are returned to the sender, and content may be deleted after two years over quota.

The other gaps matter more day to day. Proton Free caps you at 150 messages a day, 3 folders, 3 labels and 1 filter, with no IMAP, no SMTP, no custom domain and no automatic forwarding. If you use a desktop mail client, Proton's free tier does not work for you at all. One thing is equal: both cap attachments at 25 MB, though Gmail quietly converts oversized ones into Drive links, and Proton's ceiling applies on every plan it sells.

What each one costs if you pay

Proton advertises annual prices and monthly billing costs meaningfully more. These are the euro figures read from Proton's own pricing page on 16 August 2026, with both sides of its monthly and annual toggle checked; Proton also quotes in CHF and USD.

Google's paid consumer storage is Google One, which expands the shared 15 GB but adds no mail features and no custom domain. Custom-domain email from Google means Workspace, priced per user. That is where Proton wins on the mail itself: Mail Plus at €3.99 a month annually gives a custom domain, 10 addresses and 15 GB, against Workspace Starter at €6.80 per user per month for 30 GB, which is Google's annual-commitment rate billed monthly. Be honest about what that €2.81 gap measures, though. Workspace Starter is not a mailbox, it is a bundle: Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, an admin console, business terms and support come with it. If you would use any of that, the two products are not like-for-like and Proton's undercut is narrower than the headline figures suggest. Google wins on raw capacity, 2 TB for €10.99 against Proton Unlimited's 500 GB for €9.99, though Unlimited bundles Proton's VPN, password manager and Drive.

Google runs new-customer Workspace discounts on and off, and none was showing on its pricing page that day. Search: Gmail's best feature is the one Proton cannot copy

This is the trade-off that makes the comparison interesting, because the thing people dislike about Gmail directly causes the thing they like most about it. Gmail search is instant, covers every message you have ever received, behaves identically on any device, and is good at fuzzy recall. It works that way because Google holds your mail in readable form and keeps a server-side index of it. You cannot have the index without the readability.

Proton cannot build that index by design. Your bodies are encrypted with a key Proton does not hold, so its servers have nothing to index. Out of the box, Proton search covers metadata only: sender, recipient, subject, date and folder. That is enough more often than you would expect, and useless the moment you are hunting a phrase inside an email whose subject you have forgotten.

Proton's answer is encrypted content search. Your browser downloads your messages, decrypts them locally and builds an encrypted index in local storage that never leaves the device. The consequences follow: a separate index on every browser and device, no support in private windows, total loss when you clear browser data, and on a very large mailbox an index that may only reach recent messages. If you treat your inbox as a searchable decade-long archive, this is the likeliest reason you will regret switching, and it is not a bug Proton can fix without surrendering the property you came for.

IMAP, the Bridge, and moving your mail across

Gmail lets you use Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird free over standard IMAP and SMTP. Proton does not, for the same encryption reason: a normal mail client expects readable messages, and Proton's servers have none to hand over. Proton's answer is Proton Mail Bridge, a desktop app that runs a local mail server on your machine and decrypts there before passing messages to your client. It supports macOS, Windows and Linux. Two caveats: Bridge is available only on paid plans that include Proton Mail, so IMAP is paywalled, and there is no mobile version.

Migration is better than its reputation. Proton's Easy Switch imports mail, contacts and calendars from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook or any IMAP account, and it is included on every plan including Free. It runs server-side so you can start it and walk away, though Proton warns a large import can take days. You can bring everything or restrict it to the last month, three months or twelve.

Do one thing before the archive lands, because it is the flip side of everything this page has praised. Proton holds no key to your mail, which means Proton cannot let you back in either. Proton's own recovery documentation is blunt: if you have a password reset method and no data recovery method, you lose access to everything that was on the account before the reset, unless you remember the old password. Resetting the password returns the account, not the mail encrypted under the old key, and nobody at Proton can retrieve that for you. A recovery email address or phone number only restores the login. What protects the contents is a data recovery method set in advance: the 12-word recovery phrase, which covers both resetting the password and recovering the data, or a recovery file. Generate one, store it offline somewhere you will still have it in five years, and only then move a decade of bank, tax and legal correspondence across. Gmail has no equivalent failure mode, because Google holds the key and can restore your access. This is the single largest risk in the switch and it is entirely avoidable.

The step people skip decides whether the switch sticks. Do not delete the Gmail account. Turn on Gmail's free forwarding to your Proton address and leave the old one running as a catch-all for the long tail of banks, airlines and forums that still hold it, then update the accounts that matter over a couple of months rather than one afternoon. Automatic forwarding out of Proton is a paid feature while forwarding out of Gmail is free, which conveniently makes this the easy direction. The genuinely tedious part is social: telling hundreds of contacts you have moved, half of whom will not update it, which is why the forwarding shell should stay alive indefinitely.

Calendar, Drive, Docs, spam and deliverability

Proton has built an encrypted suite around the mail: Calendar, Drive, a document editor with spreadsheets, the Pass password manager and a meetings tool. It would be dishonest to call it a capability match. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides are mature and built for many people editing one file at once, and Proton's editor is not competitive for collaborative work. Google Calendar has an integration ecosystem Proton Calendar does not. If your work runs on shared documents, moving your mail will not change that. One Proton capability does deserve naming here, because Gmail's answer to it is weaker: hide-my-email aliasing, built on the SimpleLogin technology Proton acquired. You hand each service a throwaway address that forwards to your real mailbox, and you switch it off the day that service starts selling you. Proton's pricing page listed 10 aliases on Free and Mail Plus and unlimited on Unlimited, Duo and Family when checked on 16 August 2026. Gmail's nearest equivalent is plus-addressing, which many senders strip and any spammer can delete in one edit.

On spam, Gmail is better and it is not close. Google filters mail for a large share of the internet and trains on that volume, and the same content processing that unsettles people is what powers it. Proton's filtering is competent and most users find it acceptable, but more junk reaches the inbox. On deliverability, both are fine for ordinary personal mail from a provider-hosted address. With a custom domain, either way you must configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC correctly or your mail gets filtered. Occasional reports that corporate filters treat Proton addresses with more suspicion are anecdotal and we cannot verify them, so test with your own important recipients.

Which one you should pick, by what you actually care about

There is no universal answer here, and anything claiming otherwise is selling you something. If privacy is the priority, switch to Proton, but buy the right thing. You are buying the property that Proton cannot read the mail already encrypted in your mailbox and cannot be ordered to decrypt it. You are not buying secrecy about who you correspond with, protection of your subject lines, immunity from a Swiss order that changes what Proton logs about you from the day it arrives, or any cover for the copy sitting in the other person's Gmail. Expect to pay, because 500 MB and 150 messages a day will not carry a real mailbox.

If convenience is the priority, stay on Gmail. Most guides refuse to say this. Gmail's search is better, its spam filter is better, its free storage is thirty times larger, IMAP is free, everything you own already talks to it, and switching costs you a weekend plus a long tail of small irritations. If nothing specific is wrong today, changing it will make your life slightly worse.

If cost is the priority, it turns on one question: do you need a custom domain? If not, free Gmail wins outright, being both free and better. If you do, Proton Mail Plus at €3.99 a month undercuts Workspace Starter at €6.80 per user and includes the encryption. Count what you would actually use before treating that as settled, because Workspace Starter also carries Docs, Meet and admin tooling, and if you need those the cheaper mailbox is not the cheaper answer.

If escaping Google's ecosystem is the priority, be realistic. If your photos, documents, calendar, phone and browser are all Google, changing your email address moves one piece and leaves the structure standing, at the cost of the best search in email. Either commit to moving the suite, which Proton can mostly support, or accept the move is symbolic. A sensible middle path: keep Gmail for receipts, newsletters and signups, and run Proton for correspondence that is actually yours.

Is Proton Mail really more private than Gmail?

For the contents of your stored mailbox, yes, provably. Proton encrypts bodies and attachments with a key it does not hold, so it cannot read them or be ordered to decrypt them. That protection is retrospective: an order cannot open what is already encrypted, but it can compel Proton to change what it captures from that point on. For everything around the message it is closer than people assume: Proton sees your subject lines, who you email and when, and can be compelled to log your IP. Gmail's content is readable by Google, but has not been used for ad targeting since 2017.

Is email between Proton Mail and Gmail end-to-end encrypted?

No. End-to-end encryption needs both ends to take part, and Gmail does not. Mail travels over TLS and is then stored under zero-access encryption on Proton's side, while Google holds a fully readable copy on its side. The only routes to true end-to-end encryption with a Gmail user are Proton's password-protected messages or setting up OpenPGP keys with that person.

Does Google still read my Gmail for advertising?

You get the account back, and not necessarily the mail. The property that stops Proton reading your messages also stops it decrypting them for you. Proton's documentation states that if you have a password reset method and no data recovery method, you lose access to everything that was on the account before the reset, unless you remember the old password. A recovery email or phone number restores only the login. To keep the contents you need a data recovery method set in advance, either the 12-word recovery phrase or a recovery file, kept offline. Set it before you migrate an archive, not after.

Can I use Proton Mail with Outlook or Thunderbird?

Only on a paid plan. Proton Free has no IMAP or SMTP access at all. Paid plans include Proton Mail Bridge, a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that runs a local mail server and decrypts messages before passing them to your client. There is no Bridge for mobile, so on a phone you use Proton's app. Gmail provides IMAP and SMTP free.

Why is searching my email worse on Proton Mail?

Because Proton cannot read your messages, its servers cannot index them. Standard Proton search covers metadata only: sender, recipient, subject and date. Searching bodies means enabling encrypted search, which indexes your mail locally in your browser. That index is per browser and per device, does not work in private windows, and is lost when you clear browser data.
